How much does Iceland cost?

Iceland is one of Europe's more expensive destinations. Budget travelers staying in hostels, cooking at campsites and self-guiding can manage on around €100–130 per person per day. Mid-range travelers — comfortable hotels, sit-down restaurants, a couple of guided activities — should budget €200–280 per person per day. Luxury travelers in boutique hotels with spa access can expect €400+ per person per day.

Key cost drivers: car rental is essential for independent travel (€60–130/day), a Blue Lagoon ticket costs €60–120, glacier hikes run €70–120, and a whale-watching tour in Húsavík is around €90–110. Eating out in Reykjavík is expensive — budget €20–30 for a casual meal. Self-catering from the Bonus or Krónan supermarkets can cut food costs by 50%.

Petrol costs roughly €2.20–2.50 per litre. On the Ring Road, expect to drive 1,300–1,500 km for a full circuit. The F-roads (Highlands) require a 4x4 and are generally accessible June–September only.
