Season overview
Summer (Jun–Aug) Peak season
Best weather, all attractions open, Highlands accessible and F-roads open. No northern lights but midnight sun is magical. Book months ahead — Iceland is extremely popular in summer.
Shoulder (Apr–May, Sep–Oct)
Excellent value with fewer crowds. Autumn (Sep–Oct) combines aurora hunting with Ring Road road trips. Spring (Apr–May) brings wildflowers and the first puffins. Weather is variable but manageable.
Winter (Nov–Mar)
Prime aurora season with long dark nights. Ice caves at Vatnajökull are a highlight. Short daylight hours (5–7h) but low prices. Pack serious warm clothing and always check road conditions.
Key seasonal closures to know
- F-roads (Highlands) — open approximately June to mid-September (weather dependent). The Kjölur route (F35) opens first; Sprengisandur and more remote routes open later. Check road.is.
- Ice caves — glacier ice caves are safest and most dramatic November–March. The famous crystal cave at Breiðamerkurjökull (near Jökulsárlón) typically operates on guided tours November–March only.
- Northern lights — visible September to April when there is sufficient darkness. Not visible May–August.
- Laugavegur trek — the highland huts operate June to mid-September. Outside this window, the trek is unsupported and weather is extreme.
- Puffins — present in Iceland mid-May to early August (peak June–July).
